Find your ideal body weight based on height and gender
Ideal weight formulas were developed in the 1970s-80s for medication dosing, not health assessment. BMI is more commonly used today.
Body composition varies greatly. Two people at the same 'ideal weight' can have very different body fat percentages and muscle mass.
Muscle weighs about 18% more than fat per volume. Athletes often exceed 'ideal weight' while being extremely healthy.
Healthy weight ranges differ by ethnicity. Asian populations may have higher health risks at lower BMIs than Europeans.
The Devine formula (1974) was created for drug calculations. It wasn't designed to determine healthy body weight.
Wrist circumference can indicate frame size. A 7+ inch wrist for men suggests large frame, needing weight adjustment.
DEXA scans show body fat percentage is a better health indicator than weight alone. Ideal body fat: 10-20% men, 18-28% women.
Average adult weight has increased 30+ pounds since the 1960s. Ideal weight formulas haven't changed to match.
