Calculate overnight hours, unpaid breaks, and night differential pay
Calculation guide
An overnight shift crosses midnight, so its end time belongs to the following day. After unpaid breaks are removed, the calculator applies the chosen night differential to the base hourly rate.
Paid shift hours = elapsed overnight time - unpaid break; adjusted rate = base rate x (1 + differential / 100)When the end time is earlier than the start time, 24 hours are added before the difference is calculated.
Break minutes are deducted from every shift before weekly and monthly totals are estimated.
A 10 percent differential turns a $20 base rate into an estimated $22 effective hourly rate. Employer policies may use a fixed amount instead.
Worked example
The elapsed shift is 8 hours. After the break, paid time is 7.5 hours. Five shifts total 37.5 hours.
At $20 per hour plus a 10% night differential, the effective rate is $22 and estimated weekly pay is $825.Enable the overnight option. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the end as occurring on the next day.
It is additional compensation for qualifying evening or overnight hours. It may be a percentage or a fixed amount depending on the employer or agreement.
